Robin Tomas Will Launch his Collection for Penshoppe

Robin Tomas is upbeat in a recent e-mail from New York. “There are a lot of things lined up in Manila,” he writes. This May, nearly three years since he debuted his eponymous clothing line in Philippine Fashion Week, is the launch of his capsule collection for Penshoppe, the casual clothing brand’s first-ever designer collaboration. Tomas will also dabble in costume design for the first time, for Atlantis Productions’ local staging of “Nine,” the Tony award-winning musical, in September. He arrives in Manila just as his Spring 2012 collection hits the racks at Myth boutique in Greenbelt 5. Tomas, who has lived in New York City since 2001 when he was a student at Parsons School of Design, still carries a Philippine passport, and comes home at least twice a year.
Penshoppe, which is aggressively upgrading its image with recent campaigns featuring Hollywood actors Ed Westwick and Zac Efron, approached Tomas following his win last year in a T-shirt design tilt that had his winning piece reproduced and sold at Bloomingdale’s. Penshoppe’s brand director, Alex Mendoza, knew Tomas from way back, when the designer still worked in advertising. “We’re in a level-up mode, and we felt Robin would be the right fit for what we need. This is part of our campaign for global recognition,” says Rocel Roque, marketing specialist of Golden ABC, Penshoppe’s mother company. “He’s very New York, his style is high-end, but he’s Filipino.” The Tomas for Penshoppe collection, 12 styles each for men and women, will hit some 30 stores across the country on the second week of May.

Designing for his compatriots has a “different fulfillment,” Tomas says over iced coffee on a sweltering afternoon a day after his homecoming. It echoes his statement in 2009 about wanting to launch his brand here for sentimental reasons. “I want to bring my clothes here, so it’s not just available there.” While his line, simply called Tomas in the Big Apple, is carried by three Manhattan boutiques, he says it excites him to see his clothes on Filipino women. “We consider ourselves blessed and lucky that Robin chose to work with us,” says Ruby Gan, one of the owners of Myth, which is carrying Tomas’ line for the second season. “He has a steady clientele that regularly looks for his creations, and he never fails them because you can count on him to deliver… And the best part also is that whatever he showcases in New York is immediately available here.” Tomas’ rise has been slow but steady. But whatever uncertainty he had from three years ago is now replaced with confidence and dogged determination.

“You learn to be resourceful,” he says when asked how an unknown designer can stay afloat in a setting like New York. The economy is sluggish “but New York is New York,” he adds. “There will always be people [who buy]… I also want to reach other markets. I want to highlight my Filipino upbringing plus my New York exposure; that’s my formula. I want to use the good points of being [trained] in New York and serve other markets.” He chose retail because “that’s the name of the game in New York, not couture.” But he wants to visit Manila more often so he could take on couture clients and, perhaps, dress up a few celebrities and socialites. “I’d really like that! Red carpet is more LA, New York not so much.”

This designer’s goal is to set up his own boutique here, and also make his clothes available in key Asian cities. He owns his business, but admits he’s open to working with an investor. Tomas, 35, chuckles when I point out that he’s finally out of his mom’s shadow. “Mom,” of course, is popular actress-comedienne Tessie Tomas. “She says people now refer to her as ‘Robin Tomas’ mom,’ in the same way my lola became known as ‘Tessie Tomas’ mom.” His grandmother, Laura Hermosa, was a popular radio talent. “I’m a happy son to see a proud mom,” he says. His early exposure to clothes and costumes is owed to his mother, but Tomas feels that carving a name in fashion is all his own. Having a famous parent, however, has its advantages: “It’s not just the fashion press here that covers me, even the show-biz press is interested.”

Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012 - Ipanema Resort Wear Collection

This is the last fashion show that I covered last Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012. This year, Ipanema collaborated with five Philippine Fashion Designers to create their own clothing design inspired by the collection. The five designers, Catherine Cavilte, Lyle Ibanez, Anthony Nocom, Dave Ocampo and Raoul Ramirez, crafted the Resort Wear Collection that featured distinctive style and design, one that truly underscores vivacious living.
So fashion-forward men and women, brace yourselves as Ipanema, the stylish Brazilian flip-flop brand, is once again showcased their latest Resort Wear Collection for Spring-Summer 2012. The changing of fashion seasons is enough to keep most stylistas on their toes – literally. These five fashion mavens were chosen not only for their modern and edgy design visions but also for their understanding of Philippine Fashion discerning style and taste. Here they are:

Anthony Nocom
Nocom's look was inspired from the bold beach colors from the Ipanema Surf Tomas Masc II and the classic black and white tribal prints of Ipanema Classica Urbana Masc.
Catherine Cavilte
She said her designs for Ipanema's Resort Wear Collections complement spring/summer elegance that features earthy tones and animal prints mounted on plain silk satins.  She said the Ipanema Appliques Ad II and Ipanema Classica Envolvente can be easily paired with her flowy dresses that ladies can wear casually on the beach or at dinner parties.
Dave Ocampo
His collection celebrates the colors of summer and feminism to emphasize the silhouette of women, using spandex and stretch tool material with floral and circular prints combined with bright and vibrant colors that are very comfortable in terms of cuts and designs.
Lyle Ibanez
Ibanez’s look for Ipanema Resort Wear Collection 2012 was inspired from the Ipanema Ritmos II Ad, a sling back flip-flops that has flowers appliqués and subtle geometric patterns.
Raoul Ramirez
For Ipanema Resort Wear Collection 2012, he created a look that based on the metallic characteristics of the Ipanema New Trance Fem and the floral accents of the elevated aesthetics of the Ipanema Ritmos Ad.
Here are some of the taken photos of their fashion show:

Philippine Fashion Designer Adante Leyesa: Handmade Accessories for Filipinas

Hi guys, here’s another good news to be added on Philippine Fashion. I just noticed these days that we Filipinos are making names in terms of Fashion Styles. I just wanted to share right now one of the Philippine Fashion Designers who brings honor to Philippines because of his style. Adante Leyesa creates handmade fashion accessories that he hopes will enhance further the beauty of the Filipino women.
“Every Filipina to me is beautiful. Some of them just lack the confidence needed to accentuate that beauty,” Adante says. The 32-year old designer owns Adanté Collections. His passion for his craft stemmed from his hobby of making accessories for his family and friends. He later introduced his creations in bazaars where he would cross paths with stylists and like-minded designers who saw great potential in his designs.
Adante uses intricate and bold features, resulting to head-turning designs. He often integrates at least four materials for each piece, and applies a multi-step process that makes his creations very sturdy. Adante, together with Leo Bartolome, his partner in the business in terms of design, maintain a meticulous attitude when it comes to the quality of their Fashion Accessories.

He also tagged along a number of out-of-school youth from his hometown in Lipa City in Batangas in making the accessories. Adante says he is able to find a way to make his fellow Batangueños learn more about accessory making. His creations were later used in one fashion shoot after another. With his keen eye on quality, Adante would later be tapped by big names in fashion, particularly during the yearly Philippine Fashion Week.

Adante, who describes his designs as bold and regal, says he takes inspiration from the people around him and that his work is motivated by the person wearing his accessories. “These accessories are meant to be worn by women who are not afraid to make a statement, who are fashion forward, who want more options and won't settle for safe fashion accessories,” he says.

His biggest break yet is his collaboration with actress-designer Solenn Heussaff for Knit Queen and fashion designer Lulu Tan Gan. In bazaars, Adante’s accessories are sold for P1,000 to P7,000. He recognizes the potential of his creations for the export market, but his priority is to make the accessories available to Filipino women.

I want to make a name for myself in the fashion industry but at the same time, my creations have to be accessible and affordable to every Filipina,” - Adante Leyesa

Philippine Fashion Week 2011 : Penshoppe Trailblazer Fashion Show

Philippine Fashion Week 2011 is almost over. Another update that I will share to you guys was the Penshoppe‘s Fashion Show for the PWF 2011. I receive an invite for this so I’m a bit closer to the catwalk compare to Wrangler’s Fashion Show that is open to the public.

A little information about Penshoppe Clothing, It provides a variety of styles to choose from and constantly update its collection. Started in 1986, today Penshoppe is recognized as one of the market leaders in the Philippine fashion, accessories and personal care product industry.

This season, Penshoppe steps up with its campaign, “Trailblazer” — the collection depicts those who conduct their lives off the beaten path: an innovator and pioneer, as it were. A leader is innovative inasmuch as people WANT to follow him or her, and DO — thus, a trailblazer must be emulated, so to speak. A test for an ultimate trailblazing assignment involves the ability to turn over a fruitful discovery into the hands of others.

The idea for the title was born out of a James Bond aesthetic and persona. Thus, TRAILBLAZER actually resonates comfortably as a Bond-film title of sorts. This aesthetic is reinforced further in the catwalk with traces of James Bond themes that will surely trigger vivid associations with the dapper secret service agent.

The given title flows from a natural progression from previous ones — i.e., Revolution, Elevation, and Arrivalist. Once a person has remarkably arrived, setting an example for others to emulate would be the consequent challenge. The title not only describes the brand thrusting forward; but, extends further to those who choose to wear PENSHOPPE merchandise —creating a brand and style loyalty among peers.
